Cotton/silk blend

Postby Miss Cindy » Thu Aug 16, 2012 5:58 pm

Has anyone here used any fabric that was a cotton/silk blend? What are the opinions of the fabric? Does it hold up better than 100% silk? Is it as easy to work with as cotton?
Any advise or ideas would be appreciated.
Thank you!

I've never worked with cotton/silk, but I do remember getting swatches of the Kaufman Radiance fabric. It was fairly thin and had more of a feeling of silk than cotton (it reminded me of habutai, but I've only handled a few types of silk, so my knowledge is limited.). Maybe someone can give you more info on a more substantial cotton/silk.

I actually find silk, especially tighter weaves, to be easier to work with and more durable than cotton. That being said, there's no hard and fast rules for blends. Your best bet is to order a sample and play with it. Check it for evenness of weave, toss it in the wash, see if it bleeds, iron it, check for shrinkage, see how easily it frays, etc, etc, etc. My gut tells me that it should be a great fabric, but it will depend on many more things than just the fiber content.

Thank you, Miss Erin!
Unfortunately, that is exactly what I was thinking would be the end result of my question.
Well, I figure these things out eventually...or maybe not. :)

I used a cotton/silk blend fabric when making my 1912 outfit this year. I found it easy to work with, did what it was supposed to and didn't give me much in the way of attitude. It is rather sheer, so I ended up lining it extensively (the skirt and underbodice) as it is a royal blue and I wanted the colour to remain darker. I left the sleeves and the overskirt unlined and they have a lovely, airy effect, just perfect for an Edwardian day dress.

I suppose it would depend on the percentages of the blend on how your fabric will behave though, so yes, a swatch might be in order. :)
