Bleaching & Finishing cloth 1851

I found this an interesting description of how cottons were prepared for sale in 1850s and earlier. Note the mention of the job given to women. Also how they stiffened the cloth.

Thank you for the article. Now I understand with the invention of new bleached fabric in 1780, why the white chemise dress of 1785 suddenly became so popular. I can see where true white fabric now available in large volume would have its appeal to the upper class. It is not the upper class dressing "down" as I had once thought but rather them dressing in the new more "modern" fabric. Interesting!
