Undies, everyone has to wear them.

Where can I find trim for my unmentionables?

Postby frockstar » Tue Sep 11, 2007 3:26 am

I'm working on the TV102 chemise and drawers in handkerchief linen and am having trouble sourcing lace beading, insertion lace and lace trim for them here. I'd like to make these garments very special and am having trouble finding anything appropriate from UK online suppliers. It's mostly synthetic "Valentine lace" or cheap-looking cotton eyelet lace. Good-quality trim in London shops has proved eye-wateringly expensive.

Any recommendations for US/Canadian online suppliers?

You can also check http://www.vintagetrims.com/

I found some nice listings for cluny lace there. The prices seem pretty reasonable, too.

I know this is probably way too pricey for all of us and it does say "allow 28 days for delivery" but I thought it was worth a mention:

Last month I was in the UK and one of my stops was Bath. The Jane Austen Centre has a display of costumes from the locally filmed production of "Persuasion" and info about how the costume designer used hand made lace from a group of lace makers who survived the tsunami in Sri Lanka and are selling lace to rebuild. They are called Power of Hands Foundation and you can see the lace for sale HERE

I know, I can't afford it either, but it seems to be a good cause and it's certainly beautiful lace!

Thanks for these. The Sri Lankan lace is indeed gorgeous, but probably more suitable for the titled gentry than for a solidly middle-class girl like me.

Any further suggestions much appreciated.

Vena Cava Design http://www.venacavadesign.co.uk, a uk-based corsetry supplier, has some really nice trims, and they are a joy to order from! I order all of my supplies from them. :)

Thanks for the tips. After some creative Googling I discovered that the magic keywords were "heirloom sewing". I scored some very pretty Swiss embroidery from Farmhouse Fabrics.

I also visited Vena Cava -- lovely stuff! I suspect I'll be getting most of my TV110 makings from them.

So much comes down to the right keywords. I thought I was going bonkers until I discovered that the British for "notions" is actually "haberdashery".

Imagine Googling for things when either American or British English is your mother tounge  But thanks to this forum I usually find the stuff I want anyway!

I'm glad you liked vena cava, I'm just so in love with them and want to spread word of their greatness to everyone ;)

Right now I'm trimming a corset with this victorian beauty:
