New to Dressmaking...

Postby EvilPoptart320 » Mon Apr 26, 2010 4:41 pm

Good evening all. I am somewhat new and a bit of a beginner to dress making. Due to budgetary constraints I am unable to purchase my victorian dress from my favorite line, and I was very excited when I found this website. I'm thinking of making TV202 and TV410. Can anyone tell me if these patterns are generally beginner-friendly? I would hate to buy the patterns and all the supplies only to find that I'm too much of a beginner to pull this off. Thanks for any help you can lend!

Truly Victorian patterns are VERY beginner friendly! If you follow the directions, the garments will fit well and go together smoothly. Now, occasionally there are some glitches . . . like a step in the directions that isn't clear, or notches on the pattern that are missing . . . but you can always come here and ask for clarification if you need it. Heather is usually quick to reply to any questions, and she'll walk you through it step by step, if need be.

TV202 should go together easily and quickly, no problem. TV410 will be a lot more complicated, but you should still be able to manage it. Just read the directions carefully and ask for help if you need it. And most importantly--make a mock-up! Simply make a trial version using cheap fabric, like an old sheet. This will give you the chance to smooth out any wrinkles that might pop up during construction, to get the fit perfected, and to build confidence before you cut into your nicer, more expensive fabric. It may seem like an extra, unnecessary step, a time-waster, but it really is vital, especially for your first try. You won't regret it!

And you won't regret using Truly Victorian patterns, either. I promise you that! :D

Thank you for your time. I really appreciate your advice. I never thought of making a mock up first. Goodness knows I have plenty of left over cheap fabric. Again, thanks!

I might be trying to teach my grandmother to suck eggs here but start from the inside out! If you have to make undergarments such as the corset, chemise, drawers and petticoats, make those first :) It will give your sewing skills a great brush up!
